Liffey Valley Orchestra
As Chairperson of the Liffey Valley Orchestra I welcome you to our official website.
In the 2011/2012 season we celebrate our 21st anniversary year, which comes to a close with our year end concert in May 2012. Details to be announced later.
The LVO is an orchestra open to all ages and musical abilities and based in Celbridge Co. Kildare.
At this stage I would like to re-introduce you to our former and returning Conductor / Musical Director Claire Condron. A vastly experienced and accomplished violinist ( among other instruments ) and a dedicated music teacher. Claire excels in sharing her love, understanding and music skills with the Orchestra members and her students. She has created opportunities for many of the Orchestra players over the years to pursue their own goals in music. Many of these players have gone on to study music at 3rd level and are following their own musical careers.
We started life back in 1991 when our founder, Claire Condron brought together her own pupils to play in a fledgling orchestra setting. Her ethos was to encourage and support each young musician to excel to his or her own full potential and to enjoy playing music. This remains the driving force of the LVO, its committee and members today.
From May 2008 to Sept. 2011 Claire enjoyed a sabbatical from the Orchestra and we are now delighted to welcome Claire on her return to the podium as Conductor and Musical Director.
In Sept. 2008 Joanne O’Regan joined us a Conductor and Musical Director. A return to her native Cork and an appointment to a teaching position in Macroom meant that Joanne could not continue with LVO. Our thanks to Joanne for her commitment to us, her enthusiasm and enduring friendship.
We aim to have fun through our music and enjoy playing a range of different pieces of music – for instance in 2010 we covered various pieces by Mozart, My Fair Lady and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. In 2011 we performed Handle’s Fireworks, music from the films Grease and Chicago along with a selection from Green Day.
We have performed many concerts in Ireland, and abroad, and among our more memorable performances were:
- The National Concert hall in Dublin as part of the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras.
- At The College of Surgeons.
- We have played for and met the President in Aras an Uachtaran!
- Two television performances.
- We travelled to Rostrevor, Co Down on nine occasions to be part of the Fiddlers Green Festival.
- France, EuroDisney and at the Cathedral of St Lawrence O’Toole in Normandy where we celebrated our 10th anniversary.
We also play concerts and recitals in local churches, schools and colleges, and with other musical groups.
We perform two concerts every year, at Christmas and our year end concert, usually in April or May.
Our rehearsals are once a fortnight in the Educate Together School in Celbridge between 10am and 1pm on Saturday mornings and we follow the normal School terms from September to April. We perform two concerts a year, at Christmas and in early May. If you would like an appointment to see us in rehearsal you may phone our Orchestra Manager Margaret at 087 617 5970.
Look out for our concerts, you may track us through this website. If you would like to contact us, please do so through our email address or by phoning Margaret as above. We’ll be delighted to hear from you!
Best wishes and thank you for your support.
Mary Lynn.
